The Rio Olympic Games were the first Olympics in history to recognize an official refugee Olympic Team, home to summer athletes who could not compete for their countries. We convinced Visa to add these refugee athletes to their Team Visa sponsorship. We created a spot to celebrate the news, which focused on Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini, who fled Syria in 2015, crossing from Turkey on a small boat. When her engine died, Yusra Mardini and the only other two people that could swim, swam their boat of 17 refugees across the Aegean sea to safety. This is her story.
